“Independence Day” - what images do those words conjure
up? For sci-fi movie fans it could be
anything from the total destruction of several major cities on earth … to the
total destruction of those little aliens destroying those cities. (It's just been announced, by the way, that
there's a sequel now almost officially in the works. Again.)
On the other hand, there's fireworks of a less cataclysmic
nature all over the USA every July 4th, when they celebrate their
independence from British rule in 1776.
Perhaps it's a bit heartless to remind our transatlantic cousins that
the legal separation of the "Thirteen Colonies" from Great Britain actually
took place on July 2nd of that year.
But hey - any excuse for a party, eh?
And after that there's another Independence Day for everyone
in the USA to celebrate, this time without much in the way of fireworks, but
definitely with a great deal in the way of some very fine beers indeed.
That's because last week, running up to July 21st,
US retailers and pubs specialising in real, good beer (or even, in American,
"real good beer") were running specials and promotions on Belgian
beers - to celebrate Belgium's own Independence Day on July 21st.
In Texas, for example, last week was Belgian Beer week. One local promotional tagline ran: "Celebrate Belgian Independence Day Like
a True Belgian ... All Week Long".
And how could anyone refuse?
With classic Belgian beers readily available here in the UK,
we really ought to celebrate Belgian Independence Day ourselves, especially
since we’re so tied to Belgium through the EU. Not to mention Classic Belgian beers here at Belgique Online, and some available with an amazing 20% discount!
It’s too late to arrange any celebrations this year, so
let’s mark July 21st down in next year’s diary and enjoy the
festivities then – perhaps even … all week long.
